I Hate To Break It To You, But…
Discipline isn’t a personality trait.
It’s not something you’re born with, and therefore the excuse “I’m just not a disciplined person” is now invalid.
We have seen it before, discipline once again topping the list as the most feared reason for not succeeding. It’s almost as if discipline is some physical monster that comes and eats the cake you want before you get a slice. As if it’s something out of control that we sit, fear, and wait to show up again.
Here’s the truth: discipline isn’t hereditary – it’s learned. It’s a skill that grows over time through consistent effort and intentional choices.
What Is Discipline, Really?
Discipline is essentially the ability to stay committed to long-term goals, even when immediate comfort or gratification tries to pull you away. It’s not about always feeling motivated – because motivation comes and goes. Instead, it’s about forming habits and routines that help you push through, especially when things get tough.
The best part? Discipline can be built and strengthened, you just need to know how to nurture it.
5 Strategies To Build Discipline:
1. Start Small to Build Confidence
Big changes are overwhelming. Start with small, achievable goals – like committing to one gym session a week or a 10-minute walk each day. Success in these small tasks creates momentum, and each win builds your confidence. Over time, as your discipline strengthens, you can increase the complexity and duration of your tasks. There is no shame in starting small – too many of us sit on our hands in the overwhelm and claim “I will start when things calm down.”
2. Create a Routine and Stick to It
Routines take the guesswork out of your day and minimise the mental energy required to make decisions. When you set times for important activities – whether it’s exercising, reading, or working on a project – it becomes easier to follow through. Routines help automate discipline. Think of it like muscle memory; the more you repeat something, the less effort it requires over time. Therefore, making it easier to push forward when motivation dips. Side note for you all: just as routine builds habits & momentum – creating a routine of excuses will also do the same – so catch yourself before you keep letting yourself get away with shitty behaviours & excuses.
3. Understand and Embrace Discomfort
One of the hardest things about discipline is confronting the discomfort that often comes with doing things that aren’t immediately enjoyable. Discipline asks you to prioritise long-term benefits over short-term pleasures. This could mean waking up early when you’d rather sleep in, saying no to distractions, or pushing yourself through a challenging workout. The truth is, growth happens in discomfort and when you push through resistance, you expand your capacity for discipline. Learning to lean into that discomfort is one of the most powerful ways to grow.
4. Track Your Progress
Keeping a record of your efforts can be incredibly motivating. Whether you prefer a physical journal, a habit-tracking app, or a simple checklist, tracking your progress gives you a visual reminder of how far you’ve come. On tough days, being able to look back at what you’ve already accomplished can reignite your determination to keep going. It also helps you stay accountable to yourself, and it’s a great way to identify patterns – both good and bad – in your behaviour.
5. Surround Yourself with Support and Accountability
It’s easier to build discipline when you have others supporting you. Whether it’s a friend, mentor, coach, or community, having someone hold you accountable can help you stay on track. When you share your goals and progress with others, it creates a sense of responsibility, and having someone cheer you on during tough moments can be a huge motivator. On the flip side, surrounding yourself with people who exhibit the kind of discipline you admire can inspire you to step up on your own efforts. This also looks at those who DO NOT support your goals “Why are you doing that??” “It’s just one day, let loose!!” “You are no fun!” – Time to say BYEEEEE.
The Reality
No one is born disciplined. It’s not a magical quality that some people have and others don’t. It’s a muscle you can grow, and like any muscle, it requires regular exercise. The more you work at it, the stronger it becomes.
Start small. Build routines. Embrace discomfort. Track your wins. And surround yourself with people who lift you up, not drag you down. Over time, you’ll find that discipline becomes less of a chore and more of a natural part of who you are.
