We’ve been reflecting on how often we, as humans, cling to behaviors that don’t serve us – simply because they’re comfortable. It’s strange, isn’t it? We all have those habits or patterns we know aren’t serving us, yet we keep returning to them like an old pair of shoes – worn out, but familiar.
As we all know, we’re all in the loving yourself era. But often what people confused this with is letting their shitty behaviors play out because “that’s just them”, and rather than working through them, they let them become an extension of themselves and try to find other ways to achieve their goals…
The result? We find ourselves stuck in the same cycle, chasing the same goals, and wondering why we aren’t moving forward.
What If We Challenged the Stories We Tell Ourselves?
Here are some common ones:
Did any of these hit home? What stories do we hold onto and let define us? Often, these stories are the biggest roadblocks to our progress.
We let these habits dictate our lives to the point where we either:
A) Don’t set the goal in the first place.
B) Try, fail, and get stuck in the same cycle.
Why? Because we let these behaviors become “just who we are.”
The Power of Changing the Narrative
Here’s the truth: these habits didn’t appear out of nowhere. At some point, we created them and allowed them to become part of our identity. But with a little grit and a shift in perspective, we can rewrite the script.
When we constantly break promises to ourselves, we chip away at our self-trust. It’s like having a friend who always flakes on plans – eventually, we stop believing in them.
The same applies to us. Each time we follow through on a promise to ourselves, we build that trust back up. We prove that we’re capable of rewriting those old stories and leaving behind habits that no longer serve us.
Find the stories that you are holding onto, the excuses you are letting define yourself. It’s time to challenge them. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but isn’t the pain of staying stuck far worse?
