Not Seeing Results? Here’s Why.
Let’s look at the bigger picture…
Achieving your fitness goals isn’t just about showing up to the gym – it’s about the whole package. Often, we overlook the factors outside of our workouts, like sleep, recovery, nutrition, and consistency, that play a massive role in our results.
If you’ve been feeling frustrated or stuck, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Now it’s time to open our eyes to the bigger picture and make sure we’re ticking off all the boxes and understand why they are just as important.
Why You Might Not Be Seeing The Results You Want
There can be multiple reasons as to why you might not be seeing the results you want from your training. Whether you have goals in relation to your strength in the gym, body composition goals or even your energy levels and feelings of accomplishment, we’re going to throw a couple of ideas your way as to why this might be the case.
Reason #1: Not Following A Program
Are you someone who walks into the gym and wings every session? While this might feel fun, it’s not the most effective way to train. Without having a structured plan it’s hard to track your progress to know if you’re improving and you also risk overtraining some areas and undertraining others.
Solution: Start following a program tailored to your goals, whether it’s strength, endurance, or to become a hybrid queen – a good program provides structure, accountability, and a roadmap to success.
Reason #2: Not Tracking Your Weights
If you’re lifting the same weights every week, it’s no wonder your progress has plateaued. Your muscles adapt quickly and need new challenges to grow. In order to get maximum results, you need to be progressively overloading – whether that’s increasing the weight or reps over time.
Solution: Start tracking your lifts. Use your phone’s notes app to record weights and reps for each exercise. Aim to increase weight or reps weekly and you will start to see improvements.
Reason #3. Not Training With Enough Intensity
Sometimes we might not push ourselves as hard as we think we are. Are you stopping your sets as soon as you hit the prescribed reps, even though you know you have more in the tank? If so, you’re leaving gains on the table. Again, in order to reach maximum growth and achieve maximum results, we should be training close to failure in our training sessions.
Solution: Push closer to failure in your sets. Either increase the weight to ensure you have only 1-2 reps left in the tank by the end of your set, or add “bonus reps” after your final set to truly challenge your muscles.
Reason #4. Inconsistent Training
Consistency is the backbone of progress. If you do 4 sessions in one week, but then don’t hit the gym again until 3 weeks later, you can’t really expect to be where you want to be. Goals take time and repeated efforts. You need to be showing up for yourself consistently, building solid foundations and sticking to them.
Solution: Schedule your training sessions like appointments and stick to them. Aim for steady, repeated efforts – results take time, but they’re worth it.
Reason #5. Neglecting Recovery
Not giving your body enough time to rest and recover can be sabotaging your goals and delaying your results. Recovery is the time where your muscles repair and grow, so without proper rest, you risk overtraining, fatigue, and injury, which all may ultimately stall your progress.
Solution: Prioritise quality sleep (aiming for 7-9 hours per night), stay hydrated and incorporate activity recovery (stretching, foam rolling, or walking), don’t forget to treat yourself to a massage or sauna session on your rest days.
Reason #6. Poor Nutrition
No matter how hard you train, nutrition plays a significant role in your results. Whether you’re looking to lose weight or gain muscle, what you eat needs to support your goals. Your body needs fuel to perform at it’s best so make sure you’re giving it all the love it deserves.
Solution: Eat something before your training sessions for energy (this could be as simple as a banana), focus on consuming protein and carbs post-workout to help your muscles repair and grow. Most importantly, be sure to align your nutrition with your goals!
As mentioned before, there is A LOT that goes on behind the scenes in order to get the results you may be seeking. While it is all well and good to focus on what is happening within the gym and your training sessions, it is just as important to focus on what happens outside of it.
What Do I Do Now?
Start small. Pick one of the dot points above and spend a couple of weeks focusing on that until you’ve got it down pat, then pick another one to work on. We’re not saying you have to change everything all at once, because that isn’t going to be sustainable.
If you do want sustainable, long-term change, then your best bet is going to be to take them step by step. It will take time, but it will be well worth it when the goals you;re striving for start to become a part of your routines.
