The Good Ol’ “Balls to the Wall” Approach
Setting Goals vs. Going Overboard
If you’re a natural high-achiever with a mountain of goals, you’re not alone. Many of us want everything and want it now. But the truth is, we’re human—and good things take time.
Having big goals and chasing more is great! But if reaching those goals means beating yourself up for not being “there” yet or for not pushing as hard as you “should,” that drive can do more harm than good.
Finding Balance: Progress Without Perfection
Starting something new isn’t easy, especially if you’re balancing it with the day-to-day responsibilities of adult life (boring). So instead of going “all or nothing,” try taking things one step at a time.
Too often, people dive into a training or nutrition journey with huge expectations, only to give up if they don’t see results fast enough. But here’s the harsh truth: the only way you can “fail” at something is if you give up.
Be Kind to Yourself
Progress doesn’t happen in isolation; it’s influenced by everything else going on in your life. Consider all these factors that may affect your journey: work stress and hours, relationships, health and illness, social events and commitments and many many more.
Your training and nutrition progress isn’t just affected by how much you move your body & what you put into your mouth… it’s impacted by your entire life! This isn’t to scare you away from it, it’s more so to draw you towards it knowing that it’s okay if you can’t commit your entire being to it – because you don’t have to in order to progress!
At the end of the day, life is there to be ENJOYED – and to be quite frank, we want to make the most of it in all areas – not just training & nutrition. We move our bodies because we love it. We eat well because we love it. And we also go out with friends, have a couple bevs, and eat our share of hot chips and chocolate—because we love that too.
So, at the end of the day, you don’t have to be superhuman or give 100% all the time. Something is always better than nothing, and remember: your “best” is going to look different every single day. Just keep moving forward, at whatever pace fits your life right now.
