Top 5 Training Mistakes
We’ll be honest, all of the mistakes we’re about to list, we’ve been there done that… with every single one of them.
The reason we pointed this out is because we all start somewhere. We were all a beginner stepping foot into the gym, having no f*cking clue what we were doing at some stage in our training journey – and this might even be you right now, just starting your training journey! (If so – WELCOME, and takes notes xx)
MISTAKE #1 – Not Following a Structured Program / Choosing Random and Unproductive Exercises
  • When you don’t have a clear plan or program, it’s easy to fall into the trap of doing random exercises that don’t really align with your goals. If you want to build muscle, lose fat, get stronger, recover from an injury, or develop your technique, you need a structured program.

  • Doing random exercises might feel fun in the moment, but without structure, you’re not maximising your potential. A well-designed program helps track progress, provides purpose to each workout, and ensures you’re targeting the right muscle groups at the right intensity.
MISTAKE #2 – Not Training Close Enough to Failure
  • One of the biggest things I didn’t pay attention to early on was how close I was actually training to failure during each set. It’s easy to think you’re pushing yourself, but if you don’t know how many reps you have left in the tank after each set, or you aren’t taking into consideration how that may be different each week due to external stressors – then you’re probably leaving progress outside the gym door. Remember, Consistency, not perfection, is the goal.
MISTAKE #3 – Training to Failure… ALL THE TIME!
  • Although we love to encourage a “send it” sesh – this isn’t something we want to do on the reg, let alone in every single session!

  • It can be easy to fall into the trap of training to failure all the time, because it makes you feel like you’re “pushing yourself”, but training to somewhere around an RPE 7, is honestly just as necessary and beneficial when it comes to training. If you’re training to failure all the time, you might stumble upon burnout, injury and ultimately hinder your long-term progress.
MISTAKE #4 – Skipping Your Warm Ups
  • Don’t skip your warm up! Our warm ups are there to simply activate and engage the required muscles for the particular session at hand, and increase overall body and muscle temperature which increases blood flow to the active muscles. AKA, warm ups get your body ready to lift shit xx

  • If we aren’t making that “mind to muscle” connection during our warm up, then chances are, we haven’t actually activated them to the level required.
MISTAKE #5 – Overtraining & Undereating
  • This is a big one. There’s so much information out there about the “magic number” of days to train, but in all honesty – we always need to bring it back to our INDIVIDUAL journey, and what we can personally handle, in order to continue to progress.

  • It’s all well and good asking Suzie how many days she trains and what type of training she does, then going ahead and doing the exact same expecting the exact same results – but considering Suzie is not YOU – then that makes this question almost pointless.

  • Find what works for you, your schedule and most importantly what YOU enjoy and challenge yourself in these areas. Don’t worry about Suzie, I can guarantee she ain’t worried about what you’re doing.

  • If you’re pushing yourself too hard in the gym and not eating enough to fuel your body, you’re just setting yourself up for failure. You might feel like you’re doing everything right, but without proper recovery and nutrition, you’re just digging yourself into a hole.
Things to Remember
We’ve all been beginners at some point and had to learn these things for ourselves. Some of us didn’t have a clue, but trust us, you’ll be fine! Take it one step at a time, stay patient, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The key is learning from them and adjusting as you go. So listen to your body, take rest days, adjust your training intensity when necessary, and fuel your body!!
