How Variety Too Early Can Affect Progression
Let’s talk about a common gym mistake that might be holding you back: too much variety too soon.
While it can feel exciting to mix things up every session, constantly changing your program can actually do more harm than good—especially if you have specific goals in mind.
Don’t get us wrong, we are all for people moving in a way that feels GOOD for THEM, but we do need to consider our goals too and how a randomised program could be affecting those goals.
The power of repetition – progress doesn’t come from randomness or lucky dip workouts—it comes from consistency. Repeating the same program for 4–8 weeks allows your body to adapt, grow, and achieve progressive overload.
What Is Progressive Overload?
Progressive overload means gradually increasing the challenge on your muscles by upping the weight, frequency, or reps over time. Here’s the thing: if your program is all over the place, how can you track—or even notice—your progress?
With random workouts, the focus often shifts to just surviving the session: Pushing as hard and fast as you can. Burning the most calories possible. While there’s nothing wrong with sweating it out, training should be about more than that.
The Basics Are Your Best Friend
You don’t need a super complicated program featuring the latest influencer-inspired moves to get results. In fact, the basics done REALLY WELL are usually all you need to crush your goals. Stick to a program that focuses on key movements, repeat it consistently for 4–8 weeks, and make tweaks using progressive overload.
This approach allows you to – track your progress, watch your strength and endurance improve, hone your technique, quality of movement always beats quantity, achieve meaningful results, strength, hypertrophy, physique changes—you name it.
Now, Variety Isn’t the Enemy—It Just Needs Timing
Variety isn’t inherently bad, but it should come after you’ve mastered the basics. Once you’ve nailed your foundational lifts and built strength, then you can start incorporating new exercises for fun, variety, or targeting specific areas.
What Should Your Focus Be? Here’s a checklist for success:
  • Quality of Movement
Always prioritise technique over heavy loads. Proper form is non-negotiable.

  • Training Enjoyment
Choose movements and a structure you enjoy—it’s the key to consistency.

  • Efficiency Over Complexity
Get the most out of the least. Nail the basics, and let them work their magic.
Master the Basics and See Results
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Getting REALLY good at foundational movements will not only help you build strength and hypertrophy but often lead to the physical results you’re chasing as well.
So, the next time you feel tempted to hop from program to program or try that trendy exercise you saw on Instagram, remember this: the basics, done consistently and well, will always have your back. Progress comes from repetition. Trust the process, stick with it, and watch yourself thrive.
