When Motivation Is Low, What Do You Do?
Let’s be real – motivation isn’t constant.
As much as we all want to be 100% motivated all the time, that’s just not realistic. It ebbs and flows, and if we let that dictate our actions, we’d never get much done. That’s where discipline steps in.
We’ve all heard the phrase “When you lack motivation, rely on discipline,” and while it might sound cliché, it’s solid advice. Discipline is the bridge that carries us through those low-energy days and keeps us moving toward our goals, even when the spark isn’t there.
Think about brushing your teeth. Are you always excited to do it? Probably not. But you still make it happen because it’s a habit, and you know it’s good for you. Apply that same mindset to your other goals – whether it’s hitting the gym, prepping your meals, or prioritising rest.
Who Are You When Motivation Is Low?
When motivation dips, people tend to fall into two categories. They either:
1. Let it take over
  • You give in to the lack of motivation and simply stop showing up.
  • Your goals take a back seat for days, weeks, or even months.
  • You find yourself waiting for the “perfect time” to start again.
  • You feel stuck, wishing you had the drive to push forward, but you stay in the same place.
2. Run with it and push through
  • You accept that motivation can’t always be high but keep going anyway.
  • You rely on discipline to take over and ensure you get things done.
  • You break things down into manageable steps and focus on just showing up.
  • You’ve built routines and habits that guide you, even on tough days.
Which One Are You? Whichever group sounds more like you is totally fine. But the important question is: Which version of yourself do you want to become? Now, back to discipline and how we can use it to our advantage.
How To Build Discipline When Motivation Is Low
1. Break it down
Big tasks can feel overwhelming when you’re not motivated. Instead, focus on one small step at a time. Put on your gym clothes. Get in the car. Walk into the gym. Take it step by step, and before you know it, you’ve done the thing you didn’t feel like doing.
2. Focus on habits
Habits are your safety net when motivation falters. Create routines that align with your goals, so showing up becomes second nature. For example, always go to the gym on set days, no matter how you feel. Prepare your meals in advance to avoid last-minute temptations.
3. Ask for support
Lean on your community. Whether it’s a friend, a coach, or a gym group, having people around who support your goals can make the journey feel less daunting.
4. Remind yourself of your WHY
Why did you set this goal in the first place? What’s the bigger picture? Keeping your “why” front and centre can reignite your drive, even when motivation feels out of reach.
Always Remember
Motivation is fleeting, but discipline is long lasting. When you’re in a low spot, remember that every small action counts. You don’t have to climb the whole mountain in one day – just take the next step. There’s power in showing up, even when you don’t feel like it. Over time, those little moments of effort will add up to big results.
